I'm not the guy here to be taking directions from when talking about bankroll management. not really that good with money I am afraid. but I can help out a little by sharing some "bad examples" a little list of things NOT to do if you wanna keep your bankroll healthy.

don't play above your comfort zone:
if you have a nice streak going on a $2 buy in level, and have made a nice profit doing so don't skip a few levels and go straight to a $30 game. I am guilty of doing so and found that I don't play the game the same in those "expensive" games and am not as comfortable making plays like I would for 2 buck's. that way I loos my edge and am less likely to end on top.

try to find games with a good chance of getting a return on your money:
I talked about this in the mtt strategy section, the number of players registered determine the number of players finishing in the money.
and 100 players with a top 20 winning is better than 95 players with a top 10 winning.
the win will be bigger but your odds smaller.

play with money you can miss. No need risking your rent money.... got no money? play freerolls or funsteps if you wanna play. if you still can't go without maybe professional would be better Embarassed

PostSubject: General rule of thumb   bad example EmptyThu Mar 18, 2010 8:35 am

Thought there was a general rule of thumb for bankroll management:

Playing cash games? You need 20 times the buy in on your roll.

Playing SnGs? You will need 40 times the buy in on your roll

Playing tourneys? 80 times the buy in this time.

This way the stakes are not so little that you dont care anymore. And on the other hand they are not too big to make you feel uncomfortable calling all in's because it's a huge part of your bankroll.

@FTO: Think this is an especially good rule of thumb for you, have read the topic on admin staking you. Altough it's not feasible for you to play 40 times the buy in with only 5$, you played way over your head with a 3$ double up. Remember, that was 60% of your entire roll! Bad beats happen, your roll is supposed to be big enough to cover for them(at least a bit).

Btw, never have listened to this rule of thumb, reason i went broke (most of the time after cashing out) several times Sad

Hope this has helped anyone Very Happy

It should help me Smile although most of the time my bankroll is between 10 and 30$, and I play 2.20 to 5.50 tourneys... So still I dont follow the rules ;-) but maybe thats the reason i go broke Wink

Owh yea, btw... there is some nice thing I read about this just a min ago:

@iro: good advice thomas I totally agree. that 3$ game was not a good one to start off with.
think the x80 for tourneys doesn't always apply but maybe that's because on carbon mtt's don't have the huge play field's you have on bigger site's.
great post keep it up big shot.
